ok4450 beat me to the punch. I was going to suggest checking the timing and timing belt. I’ve experienced the same problem with my 88 Escort when the timing belt gets stretched and is about due for changing. If the timing belt has never been changed or you don’t know when it was last done, I’d suggest getting it done very soon. If Honda engines are interference engines (meaning the pistons will hit the valves if the engine gets too far out of time) and the timing belt breaks you’ll likely have significant damage to the engine. An '88 with only 115K miles is just getting broke in. My '88 Escort has 515K miles on it and it’s still being driven daily, I’m shooting for 1 million miles out of it!!! Keep the old Honda going!!!
