Should we go to a transmission specialist or a regular shop for our issue? 2006 Kia Sedona - won’t shift into reverse suddenly and is in “limp” mode, only staying in 3rd gear.

My concerns are primarily getting it done correctly and as cheaply as possible. I’ve read that the issue could be an input or output solenoid or maybe having to get a full on re manufactured transmission instead. But the consensus appears to be having it properly diagnosed.

So my question is, will the local shop around the corner who is pretty good with most repairs be able to properly deal with this? Or am I better off skipping them and going to the specialist? Also, will it cost me more for the specialist or will I save money in the end going that route.

I appreciate any input on this. We have to figure out what to do by tomorrow morning.

If you have a local transmission shop with a good reputation, that is where I would go. If you have a local garage you trust, I would ask them for a recommendation to a transmission shop.

Do NOT go to a big name, franchised transmission shop

They have an interest in selling you a complete transmission overhaul, whether you need it or not

A long-standing independent shop might make a good choice

If you don’t go to the dealer then I would go to a trans shop. But agree, an ATRA member shop not the chain boys like AAMCO.

My trusted independent mechanics send transmission work out to the independent tranny shop I use(d) anyhow.

Perhaps you could just ask your regular shop if they can do the work or if they recommend a transmission shop. If you can’t trust their answer, maybe they should not be your regular shop.

I appreciate all the advice. We just moved to the area, which is why we don’t really have a ‘trusted’ shop yet. But I’ll do just that. I’m calling them this morning and asking if they can do it or not and if not who they would recommend.

There’s a transmission shop I use and that all the local dealers use also. Any bug tranny work they outsource to him
