Should I change Transmission Fluid?

What are you going to do? Another fluid change? I’d wait for the engine failure that isn’t going to happen and don’t poke your brother. He may have other bad advice for you.

As you know I’m just a knucklehead diyer, one of my vehicles is auto trans equipped, but no experience with trans flushes. FWIW, here’s an article by a pro that is probably be worth reading:

Mine is just replaced with a pan drop at both the dealer and the trans shop. Works so far… I’m not going to get into the argument just doing it the way they suggest.

The article George posted is B.S.

But then? George is a knuclehead by his own admission.

lol … true enough. I didn’t write the linked article of course, so in this case I’m only a knucklehead by reference. I have no horse in the race, not an issue for either of my vehicles, but in way of explanation, perhaps that article is out of date, good info at one time, but no longer valid.

Posting misinformation is wrong and you shouldn’t do it. If you aren’t sure, don’t post it. That’s the way I handle it. I’m corrected a lot less often that way. You will find a more welcoming reception if you do that.

Sorry but neither the trans shop that I’ve used for 25 years or the Acura dealer recommends a flush.

In the past you told us that you had all the powertrain fluids changed for $100 - $150.

Remove and reseal the transmission pan, “pan drop” is 1 hour labor. Fluids cost $100 for transmission, rear differential and transfer unit. Shop supplies, 9% sales tax.

I don’t think you can get a drain and fill for $100.

Yeah I don’t live in California. On the awd I do the trans, transfer case, and differential at the same time. Last time was 2021 for $125 at the Acura dealer. $109 for brake fluid flush at the same time. Last pan drop on the Pontiac was 2024 for $262 at te trans shop. Yes prices are increasing I’m sure.

George:
Please take jtsanders’ guidance seriously.

I ask this because it’s hard for anyone to stay with a site whose top poster got there only by posting incorrect information or unhelpful contributions.

Reiterating jtsanders, you will find a more welcoming reception if you do that.

And good luck with that… He is not going to change his ways anymore than snowflake and peter undercar frying pan are going to change theirs… He is still sulking over another critiquing and is refusing to stop with his very annoying signature phrase, He is completely oblivious to any critiquing and always trying to turn everything around on you instead of taking any responsibility for his own actions… Another words it is our fault he is like this…

Yes this will get flagged, but at least now I can easily read the PM telling me it was flagged…

@cdaquila Carolyn, please read the 2 posts before this one.

Me thinks they are in line with quite a few regular posters .

+1 - No transmission specialist I’ve talked to ever recommends a flush. Only drain and replace.

hmmmm … how would I (or anyone) know if a link contained misinformation?

Other posters here post links to that same website. Are you saying they should also stop?

Hundreds of bad links during the last 12 years, nobody has time to debate all of them, so we move on. In the past I have tried to explain why the links were wrong or didn’t match the OP’s problem, but he keeps posting more.

All of these transmission maintenance links and discussions are based on opinion, much like religion; people have their own beliefs on best practices.

To whom do you refer? Post 5?

2004 Chevy Silverado 1500 RWD Jolt/pop after full brake stop - Maintenance/Repairs - Car Talk Community

Slip yoke binding was the appropriate assessment in that case, do you feel that was the wrong link?

If a pro mechanic knows for 100% certain taht one link of a car repair website contains misinformation, why would they post to another link to the same website?

Your comment above imho is the answer, different people have different opinions. And that’s what why an opinion forum like this is useful. Or are you claiming only you know the 100% truth? In any event I certainly don’t claim to know the truth… By my own admission, I’m just a humble knucklehead diyer. I don’t claim to be a know it all, Not at all.

You’ve probably noted some of the posts above don’t cocnur that the link contains misinformation. How do you explain that?

Here’s an idea: If I or someone else posts something you disagree with, instead of a personal attack, why not simply explain why you disagree, using a reasoned argument?

No personal attacks needed.

The “Fat-to-Meat” ratio of this site has grown to annoying levels. And it’s only a few contributors that are responsible for most of it with incorrect or unhelpful information.

Since this is a public forum, then the public can decide for themselves. It’s easy.

If someone routinely does this, then the public can flag their posts.
5 flags and the post just disappears.

That seems a good solution. LIkewise if the same poster is constantly posting stuff you disagree with, you can always ignore their posts, or put them on your “ignore all posts” list, then you’ll never see another of their posts. Easier said than done, but @jtsanders know how, ask him. With 5 minutes of work you’ll never see another of my (or whoever you choose to ignore) knucklehead diy’er posts again. Problem solved.
