Well having th3 right away and not getting hit are two different things. Of the four times I’ve about been hit, I’ve had a green light but had to yield to the guy turning in front of me on a blinking yellow. Dont know and don’t care what they thought. Just don’t want to get hit.
That’s the way it’s been since traffic lights were invented.
Latest new on the driver of the Sewage Truck that struck the train in Chesapeake, VA, is still old news, “condition upgraded to serious but stable condition” and no mention of any use of drugs nor alcohol.
If you scroll back to my earlier posting that shows the Google Satellite view of the accident location, you might notice that there are trees lining the track from the direction the train was approaching, so perhaps the truck driver did not see it coming…
However, witnesses and bystanders who recorded the incident confirmed that the train’s horn was sounding loudly right before the freight train collided with the septic truck.
And if you replay the initial posting of the video, you can hear the Train’s horn. So, I guess from your armchair, you might very well think that the driver should have heard the train’s horn, but you really need to sit in that Sewage truck bouncing down that dirt road and make that claim…
Yes, Henry Flagler built his tracks long before I was born. We can barely hear the trains in the winter when it’s cool enough to open the windows.
Same goes for airports, why buy a house at the end of a runway?
Now for a car story. If you ever saw “Airport” with Burt Lancaster and Dean Martin. Near the end, Dean’s plane comes to a stop near the perimeter fence. In the 60s we would occasionally drive to that very area on the frontage road and what the aircraft take of and land.
Obviously I know and you know the difference between solid yellow and flashing yellow. But think about it this way…a flashing yellow arrow means turn if you can while oncoming traffic is moving. A solid yellow arrow means hurry up and turn before oncoming traffic starts moving.
You agree that having both during the same cycle can be confusing?
We have a lot of crossings like that in the Boston area and the vast majority are NON-SIGNAL crossings. The law says the trees are supposed to be cut back so you can see the tracks for several hundred feet. Trees haven’t been cut back in years. No accidents at any of these crossings that I know of. I actually ran across one the other day that I didn’t know existed. I didn’t even know it was an active track until I saw the commuter train go by. We have a lot of dead tracks here in New England.
I guess from your armchair with google maps set up so you can Zoom in and enlarge the image, you can make all the Hindsight Claims about what he could have seen or should have seen while driving that sewage truck…
One more factor that must be considered before passing judgment, these Street Views are from 2023, not two weeks ago…
But this was his view as he rumbled down that road, and at the speed the train was traveling, he would not have seen the train until he turned and actually stop at the stop sign…
And I know, he did not stop and he paid the price for his carelessness…
Having Colorado B, S, M driver license, I have driven dump trucks.
No problem rolling down window and Slowing, Looking and Listening at railroad crossings.
No STOP signs at the grade crossings - athatime.
Engineers commonly begin grade crossing horn sequence 10-seconds before arrival at the crossing.
Even moreso if deemed necessary.
(Surprised that there was any horn at this private crossing.)
Such is why I suspect driver impaired.
I suspect simple lapse of judgement, not drugs or alcohol
I cross railroad crossings regularly for work and I see many people do really dumb things. They’re probably late for work and think they can beat the train, which they invariably do . . . until they don’t

We have a lot of intersections like that, can’t see oncoming traffic until you get your car into the intersection.
School bus drivers are required to open their doors and look for trains. Problem, sometimes that requires going pass the gates to see the tracks. Have been cases where the arm has come down on the bus.
Combined with a sense of 21st century entitlement.
“Why should I have to wait?” they go..
Well, if you punch your ticket
, you’ll never be waiting for anything ever again![]()

This is the latest information about the accident of the Sewage Truck and the Train… The driver is expected to make a full recovery and no mention has been made of any impairment of the driver.
The link also addresses many of the questions about Gates, Lights, and Claxons…
The exact same kind of accident happened 50 years ago. No need to layer on this stuff.
Did I touch a nerve?
Self-entitlement seems to be a big component of such behaviors today.
People standing up on planes when the seatbelt signs are lit, trying to beat trains, run red lights, etc.
No, you just came up with an “I’m so better than people these days” explanation that’s nothing but self serving nonsense.
Your opinion, duly noted.
