Service Engine Light - Olds Intrigue

I have a 98 Intrigue with a 3.8 Series II engine, approaching 100k miles. The Service Engine Light went on at about 70k miles. The EGR valve and other replacements have been made. The computer has been reset. I have taken this car 4 times to 2 different mechanics, but every time, as soon as I pop the gas cap, the light comes back on. The last mechanic was so frustrated he refunded my fee.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

John

This is only a guess, but I feel it has something to do with the fuel pump. The breather hole in the fuel tank (if there is one on this model) might be plugged. Check to see if filters are clear and note any hesitation while driving or if engine light comes on during driving.

That CEL (check engine light) is just a kid in class waving her hand trying to get you attention because she has the answer. You need to have the codes read. Some places will read them for FREE. Try Autozone or Advanced Auto Parts. Get the exact code not just their translation into English and post it back here.
