Seat Belt Anniversary

The people who think that it’s desirable to be “thrown clear” live in an alternate world where the roadsides are covered with marshmallow fluff and Tempurpedic mattresses, instead of hard pavement, steel guardrails, trees, broken glass, and oncoming traffic.

Your coworker should have carried a seatbelt extender to buckle in. Maybe after wearing seatbelts became law she did.

One of my coworkers (now deceased) drove an '80s-era Olds Cutlass sedan. Because of her extreme weight and her tiny height, the only way that she could position her seat caused the shoulder harness belt to ride against the center portion of her neck. I always prayed that she didn’t get into an accident because the belt would surely have broken her neck.

Reminds me of a story!

I am a retired pilot and back in the mid 90’s I had a layover in Frankfurt Ger. Back then there was a lot of American Military presence there. We (TWA crew) were on the hotel bus and it was snowing, with slippery roads. Our bus was in the right lane. An American GI zoomed past us in the left lane in his Chevy Camaro. So a couple more kilometers go by and we’re approaching our exit. On the exit ramp we see the poor GI off to the left side. He had slid off the road. He was standing next to the car in the snow storm!

When I lived in Anchorage, the first snow was marked by the cars off the side of the road, often 4wd pickups and Jeeps without winter tires. I learned to love my studded tires.

I grew up in Rochester NY where we get a lot of lake effect snow. It seems at the beginning of every Winter many drivers have to “re-learn” their snow driving skills. For 2 weeks cars and trucks off the side of the road! Then things settle down until March. Everybody creeping along like they should!
