Seat Belt Anniversary

About 20 years ago a friend was stopped by the police. He unbuckled to get his wallet and license ready for police inspection. The officer saw that his belt was unfastened and cited him for it. Just a little reminder to not unbuckle until the police officer has a chance to see that you are buckled.

I have a place in the console where I keep my wallet. If you always sit on your wallet your screwing up your hips and spine.

My billfold stays in my back pocket. It has my cash, cards and license. My check books are in my console. I will never leave my money unattended and they would have to kill me to get it. Too bad for the spine. The only exception is at the casino where I only take money I intend to lose and the rest stays in my check book. Pretty safe there. Iā€™m told those cameras are good enough to read badge numbers. Security all around.

Whatā€™s a checkbook?
Meaning I might write one check a year.
My wallet is in my front pocket ever since having severe sciatic pain, though the pain is now resolve, wallet is still there. Do I have to unbuckle the seatbelt to get it, sometimes. On the other hand rare go to drive in restaurants, usually only need it at the ATM., about once a month.
To make more car related, if in my truck, ATM is the correct height, if in my car, I have to get out.

I have four checking accounts. One the same one I opened at 14. I usually canā€™t reach the button or flask at the drive through unless I unbelt and sometimes even open the door.

Well, weā€™re all glad that you canā€™t reach the flask. I donā€™t think anyone suspects that youā€™re a DWI kind of guy. Personally, I leave my flask at home. Mmmmmā€¦well, except when Iā€™m on a road trip. Once I stop for the night after a long drive, I like to pour one and unwind.

You have a one track mind. I donā€™t need alcohol. So trolley, vacume tube, whatever you want to call them at a bank.

I also have a place in the handrest to store a wallet but Iā€™m too scared to put my wallet there and forgetting that I do and someone should break inside of the car and steal it.

+1
Because almost everything (pension, SS, dividend payments) is done by direct deposit, or by direct debit (credit card payments, utility bills, lawn care), I no longer write many checks. It seems that my only check writing is for charitable donations. The result is that I fill-up the check registers so much faster than I use checks, that I have get extra check registers from the bank a couple of times each year.

Well, if I pull in front of a store to shop, Iā€™ll need my wallet. If you forget it you wonā€™t be able to pay! I read decades ago that itā€™s not safe to sit on your wallet so I always remove it from my pocket before I sit in the car.

When my brother was suffering from severe lower back pain, he visited a Physiatrist (MD specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation), and the first thing that he asked my brother was to see the size of his wallet.

At first, my brother assumed that the doctor was making a joke about how much the treatments would cost. Then, the doctor explained that sitting on a very thick wallet could cause the exact symptoms from which my brother was suffering. Sure enough, getting rid of most of the junk in his wallet, and moving the wallet to his front pocket, resolved the pain problem.

On the rare occasion that I receive a check, that too is deposited through my bankā€™s ATM. I forgot about those vacuum tubes used by some financial institutions . I just keep cash on hand for tips and my dogā€™s groomer, the groomer only accepts cash or checks.
Almost all my transactions including utility bills are done online using a CC, then payoff the entire balance at the beginning of the month. So I donā€™t even bother with a check register. Get a daily email showing my checking account balance and a notification from my CC any charge over $50.

Some banks still use them at their drive-up teller.

Yeah, so does my credit union. Oddly if you want to withdraw cash you can use a drive through teller, if you want a check issued you have to go to an inside teller. Fortunately that too is very rare.

If your bank has a cellphone app, that can be used to deposit checks. It guides you through the process of filling-out the online form, photographing both sides of the endorsed check (including the words ā€œfor deposit only to account # xxxx at XYZ Bankā€), and hitting send. It has worked flawlessly for me ever since I began to use it during the Pandemic.

The only time that I had to go to the bank in the last few months was to deposit the RMD from my 403-B, because it was for an amount higher than the amount that can be deposited via that app.

I really think all this is funny, and yā€™all was calling me and others a Ludditeā€¦

Welcome to the 21st century, we have these things now called on line banking and suchā€¦ If I get a check in the mail, I just grab my smart phone, even at 2am if wanted to, and take a picture of both sides of the check and hit send, and it is a miracle, cause it appears in my checking account the next business dayā€¦ And and and, I can even, get this, check my account 24/7 for my balance, so no more, what do yā€™all call it, oh yeah, write it down and use that math thing yā€™all like to do, heck it even does the math for meā€¦ Pretty amazingā€¦

Just picking, kinda, so no hate mailā€¦

The only reason I go in a bank anymore is for a notary, or cause I need to talk to the bank manager for whatever reason, and I just email him most of the timeā€¦ And I use the ATM to withdraw cash and put cash back to an accountā€¦

My wallet stays in the truck locked most of the time, and I just grab a card and or license, ins card for a Dr etc, I donā€™t even carry my walletā€¦

I am a bit of a luddite though, cause I havenā€™t gone to that Android pay or whatever it is called yetā€¦

Heck, I even pay our handyman through Zelleā€¦

Perhaps we are the only two in this forum who use that type of technology.

I have one checking account that I only use for tax and household expenses or repairs. Iā€™ll maybe write five or six checks a year on that one. Paying property tax with a card is convoluted and they tack on an extra fee just like a lot of restaurants are doing now. Most of the regular expenses are just automatic except I write a check for car insurance every six months.

I do like to have several hundred in cash though. The atm at the bank only dispenses $20 bills. So if I want larger bills I have to write a check and cash it through the drive through. The credit union atm will give $20s and $50s but for $100s it the bank in person. Traveling and for contingency I like some larger bills but lots of places only take $20s.

We just do what makes sense for our situation.

Thatā€™s why I pay my taxes online via a debit from my checking account. There is a fee, but itā€™s a lot lower than the fee for using a credit card.

Recently, the dental practice that I had been using for many years was bought-out by a large corporation. Without notifying patients of a change in payment policy, when I had to pay my co-pay, I was informed that there would be a 3% surcharge if I used my credit card. I know that they had my email address, because I got periodic offers via email for tooth whitening and other add-ons, so I told them that this change in policyā€“without notifying patients prior to their visitā€“was not acceptable. They reluctantly allowed me to leave and come back later in the day with a check. That was strike #1.

In early December, they cancelled my dental hygiene appt because the hygienist wasnā€™t available that day. When I tried to reschedule, the earliest new appt that I could get was next April. Strike #2

A few weeks ago, I had a dental emergency, and I was told that I would have to wait 2 weeks for an appt. Strike #3, andā€¦ theyā€™re out.

My new dentist was able to see me the next day for my dental emergency, and he accepts credit cards without a surcharge. Whether someone is a mechanic, or a dentist, the way that you treat your customers will determine whether they decide to return.
