Saturn won't start black exhuast

We have a 98 Saturn SL1 that recently had a tuneup. Now won’t start. When the key is turned the engine tries to crank. Given gas will begin to start but then dies as soon as gas peddle is lifted. The exhaust coming out the end smells like gas and is black. Should we even think about sinking more money into this pit.

How recently was “recently”?

What was involved in the tuneup? I think you should pop the hood and start looking around for a connector that is disconnected or melted.

Black means too rich a mixture. There could be several causes. A good suspect is at least one bad injector.

Or a leaking fuel pressure regulator.
