Robotaxis expand service in San Fran

One of the companies–Waymo–is using Jaguar vehicles.
What could possibly go wrong? :smirk:

Ok, so the incidents reported make the robotaxis seem a lot like confused drivers. Most of these incidents I see weekly… with human drivers!

Progess, however.

Yup!
There is clearly no shortage of confused drivers. A couple of examples:

Several years ago, the car in front of me suddenly stopped on the road, apparently because a commuter bus was parked on the road shoulder. All I can imagine is that he confused a glitzy-looking multi-colored bus for a yellow school bus, and he thought that it was illegal to pass it… even though the commuter bus wasn’t yellow and didn’t have the large flashing red lights that school buses have. After several minutes of increasingly-loud horn honking from the ever-growing mass of cars behind us, Mr. Confused finally drove ahead.

A few years ago, as I was trying to exit from the parking lot of the local post office, I was confronted by an elderly woman–driving the wrong way–who was blocking my path. She rolled down her window, pointed at a sign stating DO NOT ENTER, and screamed “Can’t you read?”.

Yes, you guessed it–the sign was facing toward her car.

Autonomous vehicles are still in early stages. A lot more needs to be done before they are ready to be deployed everywhere. I still say they’re at least 10 years out. Probably closer to 20.

So far most of the issues with autonomous cars in San Francisco seem minor compared to the outrageous nonsense ordinary humans come up with.

And as the engineers learn more and correct issues those issues will become less and less. Eventually to an acceptable level that it will meet the IEEE and SAE level 5 standards.

Well that is one way to clean up San Francisco’s homeless problem, driverless vehicles running over tents on the sidewalks… :man_facepalming:

That probably happens 10 times more with a drunk driver behind the wheel.

Seems to be worse than a mixed up driver:
