I have my parents’ old 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee with less than 90k miles on it. It makes a horrible grinding noise while turning, both left and right. One mechanic has said that both outer u-joints/front final drive axles need to be replaced because they are probably rusted out, and gave an email estimate of $600.
I’m consulting multiple opinions, and want your opinions. Does this diagnosis and cost sound reasonable?

The cost sounds reasonable if indeed this is your problem. I would get a second opinion from another mechanic, but don’t drive the car any more than absolutely necessary.
You may have more problems than just the universals, such as the differntial(s). If such is the case the bill will be a lot higher.
