Rear wheel bearing and wheel hub

I have a 2002 Subaru Forester S. The right rear wheel bearing is being replaced along with three seals. The garage says that it might be necessary to replace the wheel hub. Under what circumstances would it be required to replace the hub.

Sometimes the bearing and hub come as an assembly or the hub might not be reusable after removal of the bearing, like a one time use part.

Not familiar with Subaru rear hubs, but it is not unusual for rear hubs to be a pain to get apart. I broke two wheel pullers on one of mine. I am guessing that the survival of the hub might be a function of how resistant it is to having its bearing removed.
