Re. Wide Vs Narrow Tires - I rest my case

Sounds like trying to run a race.

Not my priorities, nor those of any normal driver.

I’m just trying to get straight down a street or highway to work, grocery shopping, or fleamarket hopping on weekends.

And do it within the law, not at the absolute limits of its capabilities on a race track, or a magazine test course.

Yup!

As Marcel Proust wrote, "Remembrance of things past is not necessarily the remembrance of things as they were.”

As George Wildman wrote, “Nostalgia is a seductive liar”.

As Doug Larson wrote, “Nostalgia is a file that removes the rough edges from The Good Old Days”.

As Le Tellier wrote, “Nostalgia is a villain. It suggests that life makes sense.”

Are you not the one that posted an article about the Acceleration test about the new GTO???
I’m pretty sure the VERY 1st 2 words are ACCELERATION TEST… Just saying…

Now you say going from point A to point B legally, well then my Tacoma is almost as fast as the GTO was, but will do everything else better, except for the cool factor, than the GTO, I rarely speed in it as my pitty rides almost everywhere with me, but if and when needed, it will corner and brake better when/if needed…

I can recall reading (don’t remember which magazine…) a test drive of the then-new GTO, and one of their comments was that the chassis flexed so much, it seemed like the chrome trim was the only thing holding it together.

Unless I’ve misunderstood, you seem to be implying that the rest of us are dangerous drivers who are blatantly speeding at breakneck speeds everywhere, 24/7

I speak based on observation from my own driving experiences.

And yes, I do believe at least 80 percent of all drivers consider posted speed limits to be the speed to stay over when driving, not at, or below.

The cars are tested at those limits by the manufacturer to allow the driver of said vehicle to avoid their own death when things happen very fast and very seriously. Raising those limits makes the car safer for everyone - driver and other cars. Being able to use those limits when very bad things are about to happen is a life saver.

Big tires, big brakes, stiff springs, huge stabilizer bars and fancy shocks make for a car or truck with much higher limits. These are referred to as “active safety” features in contrast to passive safety features like crush zones and airbags. They all contribute to the steady decrease in deaths per miles driven.

Even if YOU think you will never need those capabilities, they are there and safe to use when you DO need them.

There is a big difference in drivability and performance between bias ply and radial tires.

I don’t plan to buy bias ply tires in 2025. The last time I bought a set of bias ply tires was in 1988, I agree with the comments in that old, old review.

I remember being about 8 years old and Uncle Ron stopped by to pick up dad and me to go somewhere. Dad said “Hey Ron, you have a low tire.” Ron said “Nah, I just bought these new low-profile things. See, it says 70 in the size.”

And I’m certainly not advocating going back to bias.

I’m just advocating for reasonable aspect ratios, 60 to 70-series.

When you sent your design concepts to car manufacturers and tire companies, what was their response?

So let’s get this straight . . .

You’re “advocating for reasonable aspect ratios, 60 to 70-series” . . .

Yet your OWN car has 225/50R17

King of hypocrisy :crown:

I completely agree. People like to zoom around roaring their engines around here. They drive like there is someone chasing them. If you go the speedlimit an enraged driver will roar past you and I mean roar.

Its hard to find a newer vehicle that has a sensible aspect ratio. Everything Chris said about these ridiculous tires now a days i agree with and there is science behind it.

The main reason for these vehicles having big tires now is styling, they are simply not practical.

Have you driven any of these vehicles with “these ridiculous tires” . . . ?

If so, do you feel the ride is stiff and uncomfortable?

If not, how can you be sure the ride is stif and uncomfortable?

Even if these two stubborn people drove a comfortable vehicle and liked it that did not meet their biased misconseptions they would not admit it.

Yes I have driven one, a malibu, the tires were stiff and the car rode rough. We have a guy at work with a Chevy cruze sport model. It rides a little rough but he has had so many damaged rims from the stupid low profile tires. It is not practical.

Did this Malibu and Cruze have stock rims and tires?

Do you happen to know what size tires they had?

Do you remember the model years?
