The theory that seems popular here in the San Jose area (where the Pacific-rattler version of the rattle snakes is a common sight) is that the younger snakes aren’t as wise to the world, so they are more inclined to strike, making them more of a hazard to hikers. The older ones know enough to only strike when absolutely necessary.
