“The person” had a responsibility to check the car out ahead of time. In most state’s used car sales by private individuals are “as-is” unless otherwise stated in writing. Unless you did that, you have zero obligation to the buyer. That includes zero obligation to provide any explanations. Simply say “sorry, the sale was as-is” and hang up.
For gosh sake, it’s a 19 year old car!
