Odd overheating issue equinox

Or maybe when the engine first overheated, the open-deck block warped just enough that even with resurfaced heads and new gaskets and bolts, exhaust gases leak out into the water jacket, displacing coolant. Or maybe there’s a hairline crack or casting flaw in the aluminum. Or maybe the exhaust is crushed or restricted, etc. Personally, anytime I see a vehicle for sale which has been overheated, I assume the engine will need to be replaced, unless it’s a closed-deck cast iron block. Anything aluminum, I assume will require engine removal, and resurfacing of the block, which would make a working used motor cheaper and easier.

I think the engine is toast

Chevy 3.4 is closed deck iron block. Seller said heads looked fine. But said resurfacing was good thing.

His opinion is free . . .

Well just from experience, you can’t tell by looking at them. You have to do that electro test for cracks in addition to a re-surface. Then the valve job, then increased oil consumption due to higher compression, then assume everything was done right. I would never open up a high mileage engine again. My loss maybe but headaches are no fun. Magna flux. Senior moment.
