Nissan Murano with a rhythmic thumping noise

My newly bought 2005 Nissan Murano (the biggest car I have ever owned) has a rhythmic thumping sound that the faster I go, the faster it thumps. I don’t notice any other symptoms, that is no vibration or anything else, just the thumping. It happens whether I am going fast or slow but the speed of the thumping is related to the speel of the turning of the wheels. What could it be?

The vehicle should be brought in to have the tires inspected.

A belt separation in a tire can cause that noise.

Did you just buy this vehicle from some kind of a dealer?

I’m also wondering whether or not there was a test drive before purchase?

Certainly the tires need to be checked out. And the wheel bearings, but that usually does change with speed.

I decided to to mention a test drive just yet even though it is one of the most important parts of buying a car. If we get off on that tangent we might lose a visitor.

+1 (or3?) for having the tires checked out as well as the wheel bearings…

If this is an AWD, have the driveshaft U-joints and carrier bearing checked also…

It would also be a great time to have a post purchase inspection done while checking for all the above…

Welcome to the forum and sorry you are having issues with the new (to you) vehicle…

Thanks to all of you who have responded. I did test drive the vehicle before I bought it. It made the noise then. So they went ahead and fixed it, but it isn’t fixed. I live in Spain and talking with mechanics is a challenge because I don’t know the names of all the car parts in Catalan (I live in Catalonia, Spain). They replaced something that had to do with the transmission, some bar that goes across the car. I don’t know what it is or what it is called, but it took over three weeks to get the part. That seemed to lessen the noise, but I still hear it. So I took it back today and asked that they check the tires (which are new), the lug nuts, which would be the simplest. If that doesn’t do it, I suppose they will look into other possibilities. I wondered why doing what they did decreased the noise, but didn’t eliminate it. Oh well. As everyone here says, “Patience.”

Thank you.

Thanks for not mentioning it. It’s true that it could drive someone away as it doesn’t answer the question, it just assigns blame. I did test drive the car and heard the noise then. I bought it and they were supposed to fix it. And in fact, whatever it was that they did (something that runs across the width of the car and has to do with the transmission, I live in Catalonia, Spain and although I speak Catalan, I am not too savvy with car parts in Catalan), whatever it was did diminish the noise, but in certain locations I can still hear it whereas before I could always hear it. It gets faster when I go faster. It’s a soft thumping, not a knocking or steady screaming type of sound.

It’s a tire.

Thanks. I’ve taken it back to the mechanic and suggested tire, lug nuts, and wheel bearing as possibililties from the information I’ve gathered. It’s been a challenge to hear the same noise duplicated in videos, but I did find a couple, each one with a different solution! We’ll see what they say.
