Mercury Villager '96. Just put in new starter (& solenoid)and when I hook up batt, what I assume is the new starter fires up with ignition off. High whirring sound. What did I do wrong. I am no mechanic but do just fine with a shop manual.
sounds like the wires to the silonoid are on the wrong terminals. mainly the positive battery cable. re-check where you have the positive battery cable connected to the silonoid. My bet is that it is attached to the wrong place on the silonoid. -or the other wires to the silonoid are backwards. Play the shuffle game a bit and check those wires.
