As my hometown has grown schools have been built and even for a grease monkey like me it has seemed obvious from the onset that no thought was put into considering heating and cooling them. With great expanses of walls facing east and west that were glass from knee high to the ceiling in a climate where 90*+ in September and 80*+ in October, March, April and May someone was amazed that the teachers were complaining of intollerable heat the first year and the PTO at my childrens school raised donations for fans which I threw a few dollars into. And the next year I was amazed that the money was spent on installing 2 ceiling fans in each room rather than large exhaust fans at the ends of each hall to draw out the heat. The next year much of the glass was covered with a vinyl siding which actually did help but by then teachers were spending their own money and installing window air conditioners in their rooms and the city reluctantly wired the rooms to accomodate the 220v units.
