I really see no need for kids to learn how to change vehicle oil . I think that with so many vehicles that can’t drive up on ramps , HOA’s that don’t allow vehicle work in the driveway or even the garage , the difficulty of disposing of the used oil and filter and the fact that modern vehicle just don’t need as short of a time frame as in the past.
More important is understanding the service schedule , checking fluids and tire pressure , tire rotation and the terms of what financing or leasing contract they might be involved with.
I guess that’s ok if you don’t live in the sticks. But it’s not very profitable to take the mower, the truck, the daily driver, the wife’s car, and the tractor to someone else for every oil change. I think it’s a good idea to know how to do it, even if you plan on paying someone else do it for you most of the time.
True enough. But they haven’t come out with a chainsaw app to cut firewood yet!
Have you installed a catalytic converter on your fireplace chimney yet? Our next governor might be a tree hugger who won’t be happy with all that smoke.
Hmmm… I have not. Maybe they’ll give me a grant to install one.
Or maybe I’ll be exempt if I label my fireplace as “off road use only”.
Yeah. That “off road use” ploy is worth a try in this area. And if that doesn’t work put a Burger King sign over your front door. Fast food franchises have a get out of jail free card here.
There are places in CA that have banned wood burning fireplaces in new homes. Wonder if they would ban steamer cars, (stretch to keep it car related.)
I could see wood burning (smoke) being an issue in a metro area. Then again, wood is fairly “green” from an enviro viewpoint, I’d think, vs coil or oil. Something’s generally going to smoke somewhere in order to make heat! Other than hydroelectric power or wind turbines… Are wind turbines in use to any real extent? Like powering (not supplementing) a large metro grid?
I read somewhere that burning wood vs letting it rot release the same mount of whatever, just faster with more particulate matter. Particulate matter was the big cause of global cooling in my recollection 40 or 50 years ago. Start burning more wood to help global cooling? Not wanting to bring back smog though.
Wringer washers actually are faster than automatic washing machines because while one load was washing, the previous load is being rinsed in the washtubs, multitasking they call it today. This was when housewives had a “laundry day”. By the time you did the first rinse, wringer, second rinse, wringer, and then hung the clothes on the clothes line, the next wash was ready. Also, you used a lot less water, the same wash water was used for the entire load of laundry, you just washed the linen first and the dirty work clothes last. If the wash water did became too dirty, the first rinse became the new wash water and the second rinse became the new first rinse.
@B.L.E. Remember the suds saver option that was available on automatic washing machines of the 1950s? My mother had a Whirlpool automatic washing machine with this feature. After the wash cycle the water was pumped into a laundry tub. After one load was washed, most of the water was pumped back in for the wash cycle for the next load of clothes.
I think it’s good for kids to learn to change oil, even if they’ll never use it again. I mean, we teach lots of stuff in school that never gets used after the class is over.
Knowing something about car repair keeps you from getting screwed by an inept or crooked mechanic.
Teaching kids how to be responsible for the car and ultimately for themselves is becoming a rare life event. Schools might be more successful if more kids these days were raised with some expectations of responsibility and for a few the family car is still used to that benefit. We get a few posts here from teenagers looking for help to get through a problem so they can get back to being a carefree kid playing video games.
If nothing else, changing oil would teach them a bit about how to use tools, and possibly safely jacking a vehicle. And of course the lefty loosey, righty tighty concept is probably more useful in daily life for most people than the Pythagorean theorem lol.
As far as using tool’s I don;t know if you have seen this but over the year’s I have seen a few people have to use two hand;s to use a pair o plier’s.
You sound cantankerous
If they ever remake the “Grumpy Old Men” movie franchise . . . you might consider trying out for a role
I’m game! Maybe they’ll let me drive that old Scout Travelall thing Walter Matthau drove.
Well if Ann Margaret becomes annoying let me know.
I ran across this and thought it would be fitting here
the last point made by the farmer seems to fall in line with my opinion of the current situation with automobile technology
I can only hope that each person’s link will give them ads from their local sources. I’m really tired of Tate Reeve’s ads and can’t imagine anyone not from Mississippi ever wanting to hear the first word from or for him. .
Yeah my new 2020 Durango takes 0W-20 in a 300 HP V6 so hopefully they have fully tested all this . I want to get at least 150000 or more out of this . My old Ascender with the GM 4.2 liter I6 in it has 150000 on it and it still runs like new and burns little oil between 6000 mile changes . I have to say the ZF designed 8 speed in the Durango is the nicest shifting auto I have ever had , reliability remains to be seen but it is nice shifting .
