The big problem with maybe the newer Kia’s having solved the theft problem is that the thieves will not carry a list of easy to steal cars with them . They will do a lot of damage trying to steal one.
This may be true, but I can still easily insure a 1997 Toyota Camry or a 1998 Dodge Caravan or a 2000 Ford Focus or a 2001 Chrysler Voyager or a 2003 Dodge Neon, etc, and none of these cars have an immobilizer system. So I find it hard to believe that insurance companies which would cheerfully insure an older car without this technology would refuse to install a newer car without it. And where, exactly is the cutoff? Will these companies insure a 2007-2011 generation Kia Rio or Hyundai Accent, neither of which have the immobilizer?
Very few of those vehicles will have anything but liability insurance . The problem is that later vehicles in the Kia and Hyundai line will be financed so full coverage is required . It was not so much the lack of Immobilizer but the ease of stealing the vehicles .
Even if you were able to put full coverage on them, what is a 2003 Neon worth? A few thousand?
A newer Kia more like $10,000 - $15,000?? Big difference if a total loss…
