I love when I do that, and the driver behind me gets all snotty and rides my bumper…as if I’m somehow slowing them down. And it’s even better with two lanes - when they race around me, just to then hit the brakes hard for the light…at which point I causally coast up next to them giving them a perplexed look.
You are right about looking far ahead to anticipate things.
I hate tailgaters.
They are impatient people.
+1
In addition to being impatient, most of them are also very illogical.
If I am driving (at a safe distance) behind traffic that is moving slowly on a 2-lane country road, tailgating me is not going to cause me to drive faster, simply because that would not be possible.

You need a a bumper sticker like one that I saw a few years back [[[ THE CLOSER YOU GET THE SLOWER I GO ]]]
Most everyone knows that I normally drive fast when able (though getting harder everyday lol), but I don’t tailgate as most of the vehicles on the road are newer with bigger brakes than mine, so I know they can out stop me (not to mention all the other safety reasons)… lol
One of the many things I drilled into both my kids when teaching them how to drive was to never tailgate a vehicle that can stop faster than you, they said how do you know if they can or not, I simple said you don’t.…
Even if the vehicle in front can’t stop faster than you can, one can easily wind-up rear-ending that vehicle if you simply look away–at your radio/audio system for a moment, or if you look at/change the settings on your HVAC system for an instant. Just a second or two of inattention to road conditions can put one on a collision course if one is tailgating.
No matter how good one’s brakes might be, tailgating is never a good/safe thing to do.
Kinda depends, if you look in the rear view mirror and there are 4 or 5 cars behind you , close together, then you’re probably the problem. If it’s just a single car, then it’s an impatient driver.
I don’t get tailgated very often, but if I’m on a two lane road, and I’m holding up someone, I’ll pick up the pace a bit (within reason) if possible. If I were in a hurry, I’d want the other person to do the same for me.
I lived in California in the 80s, at that time if there were five or more cars behind you, you were require to pull off the road and allow them to pass.
Out in the desert it was common to go 20MPH over the limit on the two lane roads. Even though there were few LEOs out there, I was uncomfortable driving over the speed limit.
