Metal Shavings, new car

We have a new RAV4 Hybrid. I changed the oil at 1K mile with Mobil-1 0-16 and OEM filter. Now at the 5K oil change, I noticed around 20+ small pieces of metal shavings in the drained oil.
So, since I rarely buy new cars, curious to know if this is somewhat normal or I should get my ducks in line for some warranty claim. I also think this would be an uphill battle as the dealer is unlikely to accept my evidence and would want to do their own testing which most likely is going to show “nothing”.

My 2019 Tacoma had a similar number of metal flakes on the first oil change but by the 3rd oil change there weren’t any. My wife’s 2021 Volvo XC60 had a few on the first oil change only. My 2022 Chevy Colorado had none. I would just keep an eye on it but wouldn’t worry about it much.

0-16? Does a hybrid have ice motor stop at idle? Start/stop stuff?

Personally I think this is within the wide range of “normal” for a brand new engine.

Having said that, if it really bothers you… take the car to the dealer for oil changes from now on. Let them document any shavings they see for possible future warranty claims.

Thanks for the responses.
My experience with the dealer services has not been good. That’s why I’m not using the free oil change and tire rotation. I don’t think they will be looking for metal shavings.
On my last new car with this dealership they didn’t even rotate the tires and the oil change was somewhat messy.
Also, Toyota calls for the 1st oil change at 10K miles that specially in my case seems it might had been too optimistic.

So, on the next change, if I have metal shavings and save the oil/metal for the dealer, are they going to do anything?

You can always go to a different dealer or deal directly with Toyota at the address and phone number shown in your Owner’s Manual.
