Maybe my starter is just confused

I drive a 1999 Pontiac Grand Am 3.4L. I’ve been told this is a problem with more than just my vehicle, but my starter can be very tempermental. It will randomly just not work!

I’ll have to wait about 10 minutes for it to work.

However, today, I’ve waited for about an hour and it still won’t start I can’t seem to find any voltage going into the starter solenoid when the ignition switch is cranked.

Is it possible that I could have shorted the solenoid by contacting the wire with the oil filter wrench while changing the oil filter? If I did, what kind of effects could that have and what can I do about it?

Have you tried starting it in neutral instead of park? Or wiggling the shift lever in park while turning the key? The starter safety switch is connected to the transmission, and if its not adjusted right this will drive you crazy.

It could be an ignition switch (electrical portion not the key and tumblers) is failing as well.
