The old air cooled VWs had lug bolts and they were somewhat easy to deal with because the wheel/tire was light and the wheel center was open… Aligning the wheel with the hub to get one bolt started was not difficult and once one bolt was loosely threaded it was easy to rotate the hub around to put the threaded bolt at 12:00 to align the others. It never seemed any more difficult than mounting on studs. But mounting 20" low profile wheels these days would be a pain with bolts.
