I bought a new BMW 328i two years ago. The recommended oil change interval is a whopping 15,000 miles.
Am I helping create an extended repair income stream for the dealer is I adhere to this manufacturer’s recommendation? Will my engine wear out sooner? Or am I OK.
Many BMW owners (including myself) cut that interval in half just to be safe. It’s cheap insurance.
Most importantly, make sure you use BMW approved oil ONLY (it’s a surprisingly small list). Ask your dealer or try googling it.
Agree; these long drain intervals are insane! If you did nothing but drive from NY to LA at legal highway speeds, I would approve of them. Be wise and cut them in half. This is equally true for Volkswagens and Audis
These extended intervals started around 2002 there should be plenty of hard data out there to support any case. As a tech I have seen sludging very shortly after 15K, my point is they are cutting it real close.
Another area that has been pretty much resolved is oil filter media degradation. The filters were a pool of muck at the bottom of the filter can.
15K is from the manufacture, personally I would sneek a mid-term oil change in.
this is too long to go without a change. It was all a part of BMW’s sales pitch that they would pay for the scheduled maintenance…of course the “schedule” is too long and isn’t really a wise way to go. I change my BMW with the approved synthetic oil at least twice as often as the mfgr. gives as a limit.
What is the severe service interval?
15K. No more “e” designations for the new cars. The new 7 is a FO1. Didn’t notice you wrote severe, I don’t know, perhaps indicate by a indicator in the car.
