Locked out of car with keys in hand

The mechanical linkage on the lock broke. If the OP didn’t have electric locks, he would have been locked out sooner (whenever the linkage broke). The electronic features didn’t cause a problem, they just prevented it from being noticed (or being a real problem) until the battery went dead.

In 3 circumstances I have had to cut a hole in the door panel to get to a latch that was jammed by a broken door lock actuator. These were all 2000 7 series BMW’s and yes I called the Factory rep for his OK to cut up the door panel.

Slim Jim for sure. If it doesn’t work for some reason, pick up a replacement window at the junkyard, then grab a brick. You’re gonna have to open up the door anyway, and once you’ve done that, installing new glass is a breeze.

Just remember, it’s the driver’s side window that you’re after.

I was thinking he slim jims the passenger side as the theory now is the drivers latch is broken so it would not work slim jimming the drivers side. Even though the passenger side does not have a lock cylinder it must have a rod from the inside handle to the latch. Get the passenger side open then do what you have to too get the drivers side open.

I’m thinking more along the lines of a long jim. A long jim is a curved steel rod with a couple bends in it. You can wedge the door at the top corner, opposite the hinged side, and stick that into the car. Grab the door handle with the long jim and open the door. Fords have interior door handles on the front doors that will unlock the door, so all you have to do is pull the interior door handle.

The OP’s name is darylohrt. Who is Shirley?

I could tell you exactly how to get into it, but the last time I posted detailed auto burglary instructions someone flagged my post and the weblacky on duty pulled it. I guess someone thought all the thieves who lurk here would put my instructions to illegal use. Sorry.

Seeing how we have not heard from the OP in two days I am good with the thought he has resolved this on his own.

Yeah. Happens all the time.

OP is too embarrased to admit passenger door was open. I would call the local sheriff dept and sit back with a six pack and watch.
