Our 2018 Ford Fiesta rode just fine even on long trips and got decent MPG. Just because it is not a large vehicle does not mean it can’t be comfortable . Plus anyone with kids should really concider a midsize hatchback .

Either is fine for three passengers. The NX might be a better choice if the children participate in sports with a lot of equipment. If your family member carries a lot of equipment for her job, the NX might be a better fit.

Is she OK with a fair amount of tech? The dealer we bought our RX from had an almost-new NX available, the original buyer couldn’t handle the tech.
