I have a 2002 LR Disco II. I was told that the drive axle bearing is going out. Additionally, the mechanic says it is necessary to replace the whole drive axle, not just the bearing. Is this true?

If the failed bearing is part of the differential, it’s probably cheaper and easier to replace the entire axle with a salvage yard unit…Few of today’s mechanics have the time or the skills to set up a rear (or front) end…
