Kia sportage

I have a 1999 Kia, I was driving and I smelled something, got out of my car and lifted up the hood and my battery was smoking.

can anyone tell me what can cause this

Thank you

Chris

Lots of possibilities. Could be a bad alternator or a short somewhere or a poor contact. You need to have someone who understands cars and electricity to take a look. Was this just once or more than once?

iN THE LAST WEEK IT SEEM TO ME THAT EVERYTHING LIKE THE LIGHTS WERE BRIGHTER AND THE HEATER FAN GOT FASTER, BUT THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I SMELLED SOMETHING.

THANKS

could it be a voltage regulator

Whatever you do, DO NOT SMOKE anywhere near the car.

Do not drive it, the alt is over charging and may blow the battery or start blowing bulbs.
You need someone to use a volt meter to check voltage at battery when running.
Do NOT drive it.

The charging dc voltage should be 13 1/2 to 14 1/2 volts dc. Check the dc voltage, and check for ac voltage. There should not be any ac voltage. If there is, replace the alternator.

Thanks to all that replied…I will let you know results, someone else told me it could be a short on the starter selenoid

Thanks for the tip it was an alternator

Thanks to all
