Jeep starts, then dies

When I first start it up (cold), the rpm jumps up and down from 500 to 1000 and then I put my foot on the gas and it dies. After a couple start ups i was able to drive it down the driveway but im too nervous to actually take it out cause I don’t wanna be stranded. Anybody know whats causing this?

I am sure your local independant mechanic will find he problem in no time. Why don’t you pay him a visit?

Well ideally I’d like to do it myself, but yes, if I have to I will take it to a shop

What year Jeep?

Tester

Its a 1989 jeep cherokee laredo

The idle air control valve is hunting for the proper idle position when the engine is cold.

Just tested the IAC valve and it seems to be working fine
