200 hp?
lol. You’re gonna need exponentially more rpms. Good luck.
Meh, any bike making less than 500 to the wheel is hobby grade.
But back to car shows…
Are rowdy flash mobs banned from car shows? They could do over a million in damage in minutes. These days you better keep real good insurance on em. You never know.
Speaking of quick things…some of the Teslas and other EV’s are dipping into the 8’s now.
Famous quotes from fast EV owners…
“There’s a lot of 10 second cars at the strip today…and a few fast cars” love it!
Wont be long till somebody makes a 4 or 5 second EV.
Just a few thousand more with a Ducati v4:
" With serious track performance at the forefront of the Ducati Panigale V4 R’s design, the 2019 homologation special is the heaviest hitter on this list. The most powerful production motorcycle to run on Cycle World ’s in-house dyno recorded a whopping 204.0 hp at 15,800 rpm and 76.7 pound-feet at 12,300."
Aren’t drag races special cases where the transmission is held back by regulations? I think they’re required to have a manual clutch in some classes. So the engine needs a fairly flat torque curve to compensate for the lack of a transmission. What they really need is a CVT!
I think something like a 6+ speed fast shifting automatic transmission with a lot of difference between the gear ratios would be needed for that.
I suppose it would have to get up to near 8,000 RPM right away to get in the power band. It would be up near 8000 RPM at 20 MPH when the shift to 2nd gear would happen when accelerating normally.
My car runs a 3 speed automatic with a manual shift valve body, forward gears are 2.45 - 1.45 - 1.00, 1st -3rd and a 3.91 rear gear, so in 1st gear I am launching with a total 1st gear ratio of 6.36:1 gear
The Scat Pack runs a 8 speed automatic with paddle shift, forward gears are 4.69 - 3.13 - 2.10 - 1.66 - 1.28 - 1.00 - 0.84 - .067, 1st - 8th and the same 3.91 rear gear, so in 1st gear he is launching with a total 1st gear ratio of 8.60:1 gear, so I would have to run a 6.15:1 rear gear ratio to equal his 1st gear final gear ratio… But due to my car having more torque and less HP then his, I can beat him off the line (my car launches way harder then his), but he comes around me like I am sitting still about 50 mph… I do already have parts to possibly beat him once installed, if not I can spray 100 shot and that will more then do it… lol…
Torque converters are torque multipliers (the higher the stall speed the higher the torque multiplied), as are the gears in the trans and rear gear for the final drive gear ratio in a given selected gear, ic 1st vs 2nd and so on…
Transmission selection depends on what class/type you are running and their rules as well as the sanctioning body such as NHRA, IHRA, WDRA, No Prep street and track racing, Nascar, AMA, ARCA, CART as well as many more, in Drag racing Promods and other open classes can run many different transmissions such as 2 speed powerglides, 3 speed autos, Lenco transmission (all planetary gears) and stick shifts…
Top Fuel does not run a transmission, it runs a centrifugal dry clutch (5 disc maybe) and is the only link between the engine and the locked rear end
CVT in racing, probably not, DCT in racing, now that would be awesome if they could be built to hold up to the abuse…
Can he rev the engine before launching to get it up near the power band? He should be able to equal your launch if he does that.
I did a comparison between torque and HP using a 240 hp Honda S2000 rwd sports car vs a Corvette from '89
The Honda makes 240 hp at 8300 rpm, 153 ft-lbs at 7500 rpm.
The Corvette makes 230 hp at 4200 rpm and 330 ft-lbs at 3200 rpm. The Corvette is 320 lbs heavier than the S2000 but each car has the same top speed…about 150 mph.
Torque vs HP Which one is faster 0 to 60 and 1/4 mile drags?
Just to make a correction in davesmopar’s post.
My scat pack with a manual came with 3.90 rear gears. the Automatics came with 3.09 rear gears.
Oops 3.90:1, but I think in 2021 they added 3.90’s in the Wide Body autos as well, cause his older one had the 3.09 gear…
I am hoping my friend still has his build sheet, time will tell… lol
He is limited to the OE Converter stall speed, but his max torque at like 4K rpm, my stall is higher and torque range is lower…
I’m going to say that the Vette will out 60 foot the Honda, but the 0-60 will go to the Honda as the Vette’s weight takes effect and slows it down about 0.3 in the 1/4 mile, The Hondas lighter weight much higher rpm range and more HP takes it through the lights 1st… RPM’s win on the big end with a higher trap speed… But the Vette has more potential to go much faster with upgrades in N/A form, and the Honda is about at it’s max potential in N/A form with forced induction…
Torque gets you moving, HP takes over and pushes you through the big end…
Good comparison…
0 to 60 (6.1 sec) and 1/4 mile (14.1 @ 101 mph) are the same!
Both with 6 speed manuals. Surprise!
Take torque to accelerate the weight, takes hp to get the speed.
The Hirohata is one of those cars that look just as good in person as in photos and video.
Yeah I figured the Honda with a 6 speed manual, but was figuring the Vette with a 4 speed auto… lol
Now take those same 2 engines and trans and put them in a 4,000 pound vehicle with 3.23 rear gears and rerun them, the higher torque would/should take the win…
Sweet looking Merc…
Back to being a know-it-all at a car show, be sure to tell the owner of an R2/R3 Hawk that his 289 Studebaker engine is a small block Ford.
I suppose it was 1957 or 58, but tucked away in one stall of my friends garage was his brothers 51 ford. Chopped top, great paint, Frenched headlights, continental kit, etc. he was away in the army and covered with blankets. It was locked so we couldn’t get in. Didn’t dare touch it but admired it. When he came home, I only saw it on the street a couple times then traded for a 59 impala.
1966 mustang convertible made into a gt350 by shelby in the80’s is a local car, sounds great, saw it today cruising town.

And marvel at what that “throw-away” car from your teenage years is worth now…
Funny story about car shows. One Sunday afternoon GF & I decided to go to a 60’s vintage air-cooled VW car show, Beetles and Microbuses mostly. GF knows nothing about cars, and little in the way of interest, but thought it might be a fun outing. Most of the engines were visible, so I was explaining to her how the Beetle engine worked. “They call it a flat-4. See how the cylinders are opposite each other, they line up, so the engine is sort of flat? Some engines have two carberators, some only have one. This one has a single-carb. That one over their is a dual-carb.” GF seems sort of interested, but her main interest is clearly the Microbuses, esp the ones configured as campers. Good thing I was there, or she might have bought one … lol … Anyway on the way back she walks up to one of the engines, the owner says “hello, are you interested in air cooled Beetles?” . My GF bursts out “Yeah! I see you have a flat four dual-carb there” … lol …
