Hydrogen Engine

Great concept. Lets see if it’s actually viable.

Hydrogen engine

I wish it provided the slightest hint of how it worked. Internal combustion? Hard to understand why it would be possible to build a 22 lb engine using hydrogen that wouldn’t work with other fuels.

Interesting… would be nice to know its efficiency. Fuel cells are about 60% efficient. H2 ICEs are about 30% but can be improved as a hybrid.

Creating H2 from water and electricity with electrolysis is about 65% efficient. Most (95+%) H2 is made from steam reformed natural gas as it is less costly to create but that isn’t exactly carbon neutral.

I checked the website linked in the article Mike posted. They have two automotive engines. One produces 21.5 hp and weighs 10.5 kg and the other produces 43 hp and weighs 15 kg. The 22# one is the first above. I don’t think either is practical for anything but a city car, and then just barely.

I don’t have nearly enough patience to drive a 43 HP vehicle much less a 21.5 HP vehicle unless somehow someway they produced some decent 0 to 60 mph times…
I know with the weight of the engines being much less then a typical ICE, that the curb weight of the vehicle will be less requiring less power to move it, but just like the really old Beetles I don’t see them moving very fast… Might be great for the post office route drivers and meter maid vehicles…

This is just a prototype. Final production can be vastly different.
