'How Tracking and Technology in Cars Is Being Weaponized by Abusive Partners'

No.

I can download all the articles I want from nytimes.com, newyorker.com, etc. I get no ads, am not tracked. It’s still under development.

She paid for it. It was in his name because he had a better credit rating.

He was being difficult.

She did it without a court order, which would be a lot of work.

You mean Linux? It was developed by a 19yo (Linus Torvalds) as an x86 solution to Unix. Extremely popular now.

No the Lynx browser…

Random said he’s been using it a long time. I’d never heard of it before but the Wikipedia entry explains how long its been around. I don’t understand a lot of the information… likely you will be more familiar with the terms

I had Linux OS on a netbook I owned. Worked well with the limited processing power. I know its been around a long time as well.

The date got me confused since Linux was developed in 1991 (which you stated). Lynx was first introduced in 1992. Just thought you got them confused. It was just the date.

Very complicated. hmmmm … well, this wouldn’t even be an issue if their car didn’t have a tracking function. Seems to be the simple solution.

In this case it may have started out as a desirable feature, then a deteriorating relationship got in the way.

Now people just hide an Apple air-tag in someone’s vehicle.

I found one hidden on my bicycle. Got suspicious when I kept seeing the same homeless-looking guy riding on an electric skateboard and looking at their phone screen.

I’ll bet there’s a fuse that could be pulled to disable the tracking! The trick is finding someone familiar with her car to know which one it is.

What else is on that fuse?

I think the key here is: “Someone familiar” Most owners manuals (that most people never read) will have a pic of the fuse boxes that tell you what each fuse powers. If that same fuse keeps the car from even running than that’s a problem.

One of my friends just throw them away … lol …

I’ll bet that fuse has more then ONE circuit on it - like maybe headlights?

The owner’s manual indicates the fuse assignment diagram is on the fuse box. Do vehicle owners know which module communicates with cell towers? Would that module be listed on the fuse box cover?

The article stated the driver of the vehicle had the feature disconnected by a mechanic, possible the telematics receiver. The navigation system is also disabled.

Another tech gotcha. I tried to disable one of my Corolla’s annoying audio alarms by removing an alarm module, but discovered doing that also disabled other needed functions. Ray has mentioned this same thing on the podcasts.

Buy a new car by 2026 or keep getting used.

It gets even worse. Some manufacturers are not supplying printed owners manuals anymore (On a 50 60 70,000 car???). You have to go online and read your manual!

If you buy a new car you usually get 2 key FOBs. Harley Davidson started cheaping out a few years ago. On a $35,000 motorcycle you get ONE FOB. If you want a 2nd you have to buy it! The world is going crazy!

My 2023Tesla Model 3 only has a PDF user’s manual and that’s fine with me. It’s preloaded in the car and I can access it while in park. With that big center screen it’s easy to search for anything. I also downloaded the manual to my iPad.

That method works well as long as it is possible to read the manual even when the car is broken. Hopefully you have a backup copy you can read using your phone or computer.

No problem. See the last sentence of the post you responded to.
