I mean healthy normal healthy BMI who weighs 120. When they get fat they are 200 with an unhealthy high BMI. I don’t know much about BMI as I don’t go to doctors and I’ve never been fat. The use the term BMI in the studies. I don’t even know what the number for normal BMI is and I don’t really even care to find out right now. You still didn’t answer the roof jumping question. You just pick out what you want to argue with. I could even be saying how great load limiters are and how they improve safety so much but you’ll still argue with it because it’s me.

Normal weight = 18.5–24.9

Obesity = BMI of 30 or greater

I think it’s dishonest and rude to chop of sentences in quotes. The media has been doing this more and more and they are losing credibility because of it.

It’s doubtful that you nor anyone else even knew what a load limiter was before thiis thread. But you’re qualified to prove me wrong about everything. On discussion boards like this a bunch of time is spent talking about elementary stuff like why if two cars hit each other at 30 MPH traveling toward each other that it’s not the same as if one crashed at 60 MPH. So no the people on an automotive forum like this are not more qualified than I am regarding an engineering or science topic. They may have more experience with automotive just from memory, but most of the people on an automotive forum wouldn’t know where to start if they had to design something from scratch. Especially when they resort to insults I know they have no clue.
You can see in the above graph that in 1998 there was an upward turn for male fatalities in vehicle crashes, but the female fatalities continued to decline. This was the exact year that seat belt load limiters and weaker airbags started to be fitted to vehicles in response to the IIHS moderate overlap crash test. It just has to be enough to pass the ~38 MPH crash now.
A full grown adult male can no longer expect to survive a 50 MPH crash in to a barrier, but a smaller female can!
The increase in horsepower throughout the 1990’s is probably a bigger factor.
The simple fact that male’s drive about 60 % more miles a year than female’s does not enter the Snowman’s line of thought.
If one looks at enough statistics enough ways, they’ll find something to support their claims, no matter how wrong. In this case looking at deaths, as opposed to deaths/mile, is the first problem. Next is picking out a particular change in slope, and ignoring all others, many of which were greater. If the claim had merit, why the huge drop a few years later, as more and more cars had load limiters installed?

edit: I added the passenger vehicle drivers only part. The increase in male fatalities over female is less although still increasing. It looks like a big part of the increase in over all male fatalities is due to pedestrian deaths. A lot of this is probably due to the growing number of taller vehicles on the road. I didn’t realize pedestians were included in the graph.

That was the point from the beginning. I think you knew that too since I was quite clear about males and females, so it’s an intentional effort from you to confuse other readers.
What’s your motive for trying to counter everything I write about? Don’t want the illusion of safety shattered? There was a time when seat belts were not included as standard in a vehicle because the company thought it would make their vehicle seem less safe.

I wish the administrators of this forum would not allow such lying in the form of misquoting and false accusations to go on. When someone’s only way to refute what someone wrote is to change what they wrote then they’re obviously in the wrong.
Unfortunately a lot of discussion groups care about activitiy and participation, for page views for advertising revenue, and whether or not the content is good isn’t so important.

My problem with this whole thread started with you first post, where you start talking about modifying critical safety equipment in a car. Encouraging anyone to do that is a terrible idea.
The number of men to women stay relatively the same, for pedestrians also even going back to 1975 which you didn’t include, so whats your point Do we need some kind of active or passive restraint maybe personal airbags for pedestrians
You people must be representing insurance. This is the industry that is responsible for puting the large release weak 4kN type load limiters and weaker airbags in cars. An injured person can be more expensive than a dead person.
