How do I know if it is Toyota Oil Gelling?

I have a 2001 Toyota Highlander which is blowing blue smoke on occasion (not always and only when starting) and seems to be consuming oil too quickly (>quart/1000 miles). Is this because of the oil gelling problem that has been reported for these vehicles? Is there a way to determine the cause?

And if it is oil gelling, does anyone have any experience dealing with Toyota, especially with the class-action suit settlement?

Google “Toyota sludge” for more on this. The 2001 Highlander is apparently included with this.

Bring to the dealer and ask about it.
