Is it safe to further separate the roof rack crossbars than recommended by the instructions on a 2003 Honda Odyssey?

“No” huh? I’m wondering why. The reason I ask is that my wife has bought a very long kayak and it would help with the balance if the crossbars were seperated more. I understand from reading a few posts that if we move the front one forward we run the risk of creating wind noise but what about moving the rear one back a bit? After all both side railings have a very long groove that looks like the crossbars could just slide on and be attached anywhere.
