Hazard Flasher/Mazda Tribute just broke off and fell inside the dashboard

no good deed goes unpunished. Saturday I started worrying about the squirrels and birds here at school and drove 18 miles to put out fresh water and squirrel and bird food. When I pushed on the hazard light button to turn on the flasher to park in front of our building, it just broke and fell down under the dashboard - a flashlight shows it up near the front near the window. I got to the dealer just as it was closing and they pulled out the fuse to disable the hazard flasher but it also disabled my turn signals which are so necessary here in Houston. Has anyone else ever had this happen? Jeff Haas Mazda is going to assess and see if it is as little as a $200 expense or much higher.
