Hail to the Chief!

I watched that "Farenheit 911" guy take some Americans to Cuba for treatment,I was amazed-Kevin

I’ve been putting off getting shoulder surgery. It’s not that bad right now…but may be when I get older. Doesn’t stop me from weight lifting…but certain movements is painful. My insurance company gives me a couple of options.

#1 - Go to one of the local hospitals and have the surgery. My insurance company pays 90% of the cost.

#2 - Fly to India…have the surgery done there at 0 cost to me. And convalescence there for a week while I recover. They’ll ever cover the cost of the air-fair for me and my wife to come with me. They’ll also cover the hotel cost while I convalescence.

I’ve been putting off getting shoulder surgery…doesn’t stop me from weight lifting

It may not have to. My daughter the physical therapist convinced me that after one shoulder surgery and a recommended second for complete rotator cuff tear, I should just alter my program to a) never do military presses obove my head and b) start routine with all the basic rotator cuff exercises. c) adjust form and weight on all shoulder and arm exercises…These have staved off the second for years. All exercises should be done and can be done without pain.

After all Mike…according to CR, weight training is the closest thing to the " fountain of youth" you can do for yourself. Batter then cardio, which should not be ignored, there are adjustments you must make to account for knees and shoulders of older (re. old) persons. Both wife and I have been weight training. ( now I call it therapy as that’s what it has become) for over 40 years. NO real heavy weights like the days of college football, but enough to keep the blood flowing where the skeletal muscles account for nearly as much as the heart. That’s why weight training is so good for you.

Probably babbling about something’s you already know !

As both my wife and I approach 70, it has helped to keep both our blood pressures in the 100/60 range and pulse rates in the lower to mid 50 's. Nothing like it…just adjust with age…and add hip flexor, extensor, adductor, and abductor exercises. The best core exercise for legs you will ever do. Oh, and core ball and balance board !

@dagosa - Still an avid lifter. In my late 20’s and early 30’s I was into power lifting. But had a tough time competing with the 5’2 guys in my weight class and the steroid users (which I NEVER did).

I’m approaching 60…and can still bench over 300lbs. My 21yo son hates lifting with me because I can still out lift him. And I can’t do any overhead presses either. I can do other exercises for the deltoids. Between weight lifting and running 3-4 days a week I’ve been keeping in good shape. Plus NEVER used drugs or smoked. When you get over 50 the problem isn’t finding the time to workout…the problem is finding time to RECOVER from my workout. I can’t workout like I use to. Now I’m just trying to maintain strength and stay in overall shape.

There’s a 80yo guy at my gym that can bench OVER 200lbs (about 20lbs more then he weighs). He’s my hero.

Check the deficit numbers…since the year end deficit of Bush’s last year of 1.2 million, it has been dropping each and every year under Obama. Next year with a common sense approach and no sudden cuts in recovery interference spending, it will be down to about 850 billion. Perfect…no ! But under control and not the Chicken Little scenerio Reps would have you believe. It takes a lot longer to repair a car (economy) then it does to damage it. It takes a while to bring back jobs while being sabotage every step. The UN employment rate would be at 6 percent without all the compromised govt. cuts which is at it’s lowest level for many years. That’s why the Dems are at fault…they fell for too many cuts, just to appease.

Every single ultra-conservative person I know is exactly like this.

@mikeinnh
Unfortunately, to avoid surgery, the next to go are the heavy bench presses off a narrow bench…or any kind. After spending over $100 to have a free weight bench press station support welded and added to my dumbbell rack…I found I can never use it. It’s now an expensive clothes hanger.
In the words of some country song I heard…" I’m not half the man I used to be, but neither is that other guy !"

Benching I haven’t had any problems what-so-ever with. Not even a twinge. Shoulder press is different. I do mostly incline bench. I know I’ll eventually have to reduce my weight.but trying to maintain while I can.

There’s this guy I met who’s still an avid power lifter at the age of 65. He holds the American record for his age and weight class. Weighs about 210…and can bench 440lbs. He’s well shy of the all-time bench press record of 1100 lbs…but still 400lbs for someone who’s 65 and only weighs 210…that’s GOOOODDDDD.

MINH,10% of a big chunk ,is still a big chunk, even when I had good insurance it was still a struggle to pay the co-pays.I’ve heard some of my well off friends state that they wouldnt pay the co-pays and deductables even had one who had something done, that unbeknowing to him the provider was a nonparticipiant in his carrier(pretty expensive operation too) I think he refused to pay them and after awhile they stopped billing him, but,I dont operate like that,I pay my bills.I put off a lot of necessary dr visits now because I’m not going to accrue a mtn of debt I cannot pay.
When I was a kid(been a good many years now) you could scrape up enough funds to pay the ER,but now anything like that usually costs several weeks wages. In short Mike I like option NO.2 for you and not to mention a number of specialists I’ve been to here are not very professional(needless to say I dont go back to them)
Rod Knox I am amazed that anyone would point a finger at your generation with slander like that, true never much happened around here(we are really behind times in everything-except we do have fairly low real estate taxes[that will change when we keep importing planners from big urban areas and electing well off supervisors] {the covenants now are starting to strangle the poor people} If people didnt have much around here it wasnt because they were lazy. One reason I live here is because it doesnt take much to make me happy. On the conservative side of things though, there are those who look down thier noses at the poor folk( and honestly a lot of those people either inherited thier money or got a big break) and say" I’m rich and successful, why arent you? you lazy or just plain stupid?" Now of course everyone is not like that,a,good many have made it,by having a good idea and working hard or taking advantage of some loophole and others by virtue of thier expertise and occasionally(this doesnt pertain exactly to what we are talking about) you will find this prince or princess among men who is a genius with commonsense and doesnt mind sharing thier knowledge with dullards like me-In short Rod,the “Boomers are great”-Kevin

I’m not arguing with someone on Medicare who can bench press one or my sailboats…life is too short.
Btw, my closest friend’s son is one of the top competitors in Musclemainia…a non steroid body building association. He lifts for “design” but none and i mean none of the football payers at his HS gave him a hard time. 4 of them tried to throw him in the lake off his dock while we watch from a boat off shore, and he shed them all into the water, one by one. Body builders are much stronger then I ever gave them credit for .

Body builders are much stronger then I ever gave them credit for too.

You have to get somewhat strong to be big. But Arnold couldn’t bench 500lbs. There are power builders much smaller then he was when he was Mr Olympia who can bench over 600lbs.

There are basically 3 ways to lift.

#1 - For toning…Light weights and 16+ reps per set.

#2 - Strength - Heavy weights and 3 reps per set.

#3 - Size - Moderate weights and keep the reps in the 8-12 range per set.

I’m in the two sets of 15 group. I do more then 30 different exercises spread out over alternate work outs. Wish I had this complete routine years ago. Would have saved lots of pain. The hip routine has done wonders for my golf driving distance and Latin dance steps… Need to be wife friendly !
Arnold needed some strength to carry his money belt.

My routine is a lot more intense.

1 warmup set 15-20 reps

Then increase weight and do 5 sets of the 6-10 rep range.

Increase weight again…and do 3 sets in the 3 rep range.

Hakan Alfredson
If you get time, check out the work of this man.
Years ago when I had a lot of trouble rehabing from knee tendonitis, I came across his work as it applied to tendon rehab and use by power lifters as described by a therapist in Nevada who helped me who also did power lifting.

The principle is simple but extremely effective in all soft tissue development in training. Even my post opt. shoulder rehab therapist uses it now almost exclusively with great results.
Eccentric, high load contraction can be done with greater weight then regular contraction. Or. lower weight is easier then raising it. Alternating work outs by lowering weight greater then you can raise, has shown to be extremely beneficial in preparing muscles for raising weights. So much so, it lessons the chance for injury, gets you through sticking points quicker, and if done right, is even great for elderly in regaining bone density. It works because nearly all injury to tendon and muscles due to highest stress occurs during this phase of each rep.

Dr. Alfredson actually exchanged emails with me, offered suggestions and contacts for a program that rid my self of patella tendonitis in a couple of months that I had previously suffered with for TWO years with regular therapy. The down side is; you need to do improvising or hire spotters to raise weights. I used the old, raise with two arms (or leg) and lower with one method on a machine. I also rigged lifting straps made from heavy rubber, from my basement ceiling

Power lifters can finish last set or two this way to minimize soreness and maximize potential for next work out. When rehabbing, I did 6 sets, 3 times a day. That’s how safe it is…I eventually cut it to 3 times per week as the weights got heavy (lowering 280 lbs with one leg) for the knee tendonitis. If you can lower 300 lbs plus with one leg on a machine, you have no more tendon issues. I eventually worked to 6 sets of 15 one legged squats (one down/two up)…needless to say, knee pain is gone. It can be used with any exercise including bench.

My work outs now last 2 hours non stop without any rest with a circuit training and eccentric sets included. I need a chart to follow with all the different exercises…and a good movie on the overhead TV.

I don’t have any problems with my hips…But I stopped doing squats 20 years ago. All I do for legs is running and use to do a lot of biking. I don’t lift for size. When I was power lifting I was up to 280…Now I’m down to 230…pretty solid. 33" waste. The perfect build for a power lifter is someone with great upper body size and who looks like they’re 7 months pregnant. You won’t find too many power lifters with trimmed waste lines.

And keeping the weight off my waste and hips has really helped my golf game. Can’t drive the ball like I use to…but still can out drive most people in my league.

Kevin, I appreciate your honesty, your candor, and your insight. I’ve never experienced the inside of a prison, and doubt seriously if any of them are better than miserable. However I do know that lawsuits in some states have been won by prisoners that required the states to put in libraries and computer rooms. In Massachusetts, one prisoner, a lifer, won a lawsuit that required the state to pay for a sex change operation. He filed a second lawsuit to force the state to pay for electrolysis for hair removal. I’ve also read countless times about the measures taken to protect serial child abusers from other prisoners…God forbid that they should have done to them what they did to innocent children!

I agree with much of what you’ve written. First time offenders of minor nonviolent crimes should not be clogging up our prison systems, or for that matter our judicial systems.

One thing that might free up ou judicial systems…and perhaps our law enforcement too…is if prisoners served their full sentences and if the sentences reflected reality. If a man proves himself dangerous to society he should be removed from society…permanently. If a man is convicted of being a serial murderer, let’s give him one chance at an appeal, and of he loses that he should be executed. Promptly. The comedian Ron Wood said in his comedy show “if you take a life in Texas, we take yours!”. I believe in that approach.

In summary, I agree with your post overall.

Mike
Will doing hip exercises on a machine for my knee therapy, I mention to the therapist that my drives and all my clubs were getting longer. He, a golf nut as well, just laughed and said, " welcome to the world of where long drives really come from". I was just a few months out of shoulder surgery and my game improved ? When is my next?

Yea…golf is one of my passions. Before kids I was golfing 3-4 times a week. Now with 2 out of the house…and 1 in high-school…I’m back to 2 nights a week. Where you golf at???

where you golf at ?
I played for several years when I graduated from college, then quit for 30 years while we raised kids and did activities I could do with them…Then, 5 years before retirement, picked it up again. I’m lucky. Have a membership at a course six miles away and there are a plethora of other courses in a 30 mile radius here in central Maine. So, I can do 18 in the morning, come home and sail and swim in the afternoon here on the lake where i live and go dancing with wife in the evening…The next day in the summer, it starts all over again. Life doesn’t get any better; except when the grandchildren visit. HAIL TO THE CHIEF ! I’m on topic !
Btw…dagosa means da- dancing, go-golf and sa-sailing…three of our favorite non family pass times …

Rod and Same, thanks for the insights, now I’m a little curious, this place were the guy got a sex change, was it a federal institution, the rumour went around in my “scabies” hole that the Feds were better then the state institutions, you are right some people should never see the light of day again. Child molesters used to have a “mollycuddle " institute but I think they are running out of funds, when I found out some of these guys were child molesters,I avoided them like the plague(couldnt stand those humanoids, theres no excuse for taking a childs innocence away from them).
Rod it sounded like that guy was a young"dittohead” SS is not an entitlement,we payed for it and we should recieve it.I wonder who jerked his string for that particular piece of vitroil-Kevin
