Ran across this short video about an 1894 Benz Victoria. Among other things, notice the left front wheel wobble, the steering mechanism, and how the engine is started.

Benz made cars very much like that until about 1901. Later cars had pneumatic tires but the engine was the same and the tiller steeeing remained. They were obsolete by then as the Daimler company was making Mercedes that looked more like cars as did Fiat and others.

Didn’t Olds keep tiller steering on some models until around 1906?

Google Bertha Benz and read the great story about her drive in the first Benz.
