Garage owner in Youtube video suggests 5k oil changes

All were running fine. But I did owner’s manual recommendations.
This issue is thaToyota’s 10k oil change is too long an interval.
(Fortunately for our used Lexæ, most of the mileage is highway and Interstate, so 10k is hopefully OK.
Even on emergency transports I do not accelerate aggressively.)

Draining all night is easy and just being idealistic - required of registered tree-huggers and Greenies.

“The filter element also drains all night so there is less oil in the filter. It is discarded in the trash because Walmart will not take it with the old oil.”

I should havexplained thathese are filter elements - justhe pleated filter media. No metal can.
It fits inside the vehicle’s canister which I thoroughly clean out with toilet paper. So most of the oil drips out of the filter over night.

Hi- I wondered about that - just the element involves much less residual oil than a spin-on and one might be reaching the point of diminishing returns. That being said, I’d still be inclined to look for alternatives to putting used oil in landfill. Have you checked with where you take the car for service?

We’re fortunate, along with garbage and recyclables pick up our community takes used oil and filters and has a toxic waste drop off site that accepts bagged oily waste like paper towels, old paint, etc. I used to burn oily towels and newspaper, a little at a time on windy days, and still wonder if that might be preferable to land fill, but don’t know.

Best wishes, ks

ken2116:

They drain some but not completely, especially if it has an anit-drain back flap. Drill a hole in one or pry open the anti-drainback flap and you’ll can get a few more ounces. Another way to verify this is to weigh one when new and again after it’s drained overnight.

You probably can find a garage or dealership to take them, and can check with your local landfill agency to see what they recommend - you really don’t want to be putting used oil in there, and it’s better for the metal to be recycled, too.

Best wishes, ks

so the answer to that is NONE.

Oils of today are much better than they were years ago but old habits die hard . Does it hurt to do it more often of course not . Does it waste resources, probably .
