UPDATE AFTER 4 YEARS: Been running fine for 4 years now without issue
This might be a Necro of Necros but myself being the OP logging back on after 4 years I figured I’d answer this for anyone else looking.
The difference between the Fuel Pump ASSEMBLY and the Fuel Pump MODULE is that essentially the Assembly is the full unit, basically just unhook the old one and put the new one in easy peasy. Which is what I did.
Replacing the module by itself is cheaper since it’s just 1 component of the assembly…but it’s more labor intensive since you need to essentially take apart the assembly to do that…no longer just plug and play, and personally I value my free time more than the justification to try to piece meal and troubleshoot individual parts.
Opting to replace the entire ASSEMBLY instead of just the module basically saved me the headache of trying to trouble shoot WHY the pump kept dying in the first place, which could be for any number of reasons, faulty wiring, clogged filters, bad gears, or anything else in that monster. Since I had replaced the entire assembly I had no need for any components from the old unit…though if I recall correctly, the paddle actually was NOT included in the fuel pump assembly, but it was very easy to unhook from the old assembly and place on the new. I specifically didn’t WANT to troubleshoot individual parts, and thus opted for the full assembly.
I’m not sure exactly what the previous repair shop did, but I had it “replaced” by them 3 times and it would fail consistently like clockwork 7 months apart from each other.
I was inferring that based on the cost of the parts and total service they charged me that they didn’t replace the ENTIRE Fuel pump assembly, and must have just replaced certain individual parts in the assembly. This is also reinforced by my old fuel pump assembly looking worn when I removed it.
Based on this, even though I COULD have went and had them replace it again under warranty…for a 4th time… I would just do it myself because they were still charging me labor each time. As I said then, “What do I look like? I have a 7 month subscription for a fuel pump or something?” This auto shop obviously had no idea what they were doing for having a part fail repeatedly under their care…the same shop even forgot to put my fuel pump paddle back on in one instance and then argued with me when I asked them why my fuel gauge was empty when it had a full tank of gas when I brought it to them…Telling me to go “Fill it up”. It also just isn’t safe to be driving on a highway and then suddenly lose power, as well as the costs of towing.
Doing it myself it’s been fine for 4 years now
