Front axle on Subaru Forester

The seals on the left and right front axles are leaking. On one side, the inner boot is open and grease maybe getting into transmission: mechanic says the entire assembly needs to be replaced. On the left side, the leaking seal has to be replaced. Mechanic says this is not unheard of in front- and all-wheel drive cars. Ishe right? Car has 64,000 miles and is 10 years old.

It is perfectly normal to have to replace CV axles. Grease won’t “get into” your transmission, but if the grease has come out of the joint it should be replaced.
