I can think of no cases where rwd would be safer than awd, and I can think of cases where awd would be safer than rwd (slippery conditions).

One benefit I have seen in some trucks is better load carrying handling and capacity of rwd over their awd/4wd counterparts. The opposite is true if awd is compared to fwd in other vehicles.
