“Way” back when I was a poor college student my friend drove a AMC Gremlin! He needed a starter but had no cash to buy one. Near us was a junkyard, just beyond the fence was a Gremlin we had been eyeing. One late night we gathered some tools and a flashlight and snuck under the fence. Snagged that starter! The things you do when young and poor!
One more reason for fences-liability.
Something I really miss from my youth- junkyards. Was a lot of fun crawling around there, finding treasures or bargain parts I needed to fix my beaters.
I recall when they started to transition away from DIY disassembly and more toward a recycling approach with inventoried parts they had stocked. I remember the guy telling me they had a lot of loss due to idiots destroying parts to get at something they wanted. This is a vivid memory of a door lock actuator I wanted but they wouldn’t let me remove it. I waited an hour and still no guy with the part. Should have taken 15 to 20 minutes. Finally, I get the manager to head out there with me to see what’s going on. Their yard man had totally butchered the inner door panel not understanding how to remove it. He was still tearing away it when we walked up. I just turned to the manager and said “This wouldn’t have happened if I was taking it apart” and he gave me this sheepish look before berating the guy. I ended up taking out the actuator…
An so do dealerships and auto repair shops as well as parts house and other places so I call BS on that one… Maybe back when people were pouring used oil in their own back yards, but now not anymore than older automotive shops…
Most junk yards around here anyway have been around for many many years, a looong time before those fancy houses were built around them…
Like idiots building/buying a house close to an airport and then complaining about the noise… Who’s fault is that?? So I call another BS…
Same goes for 1/8 & 1/4 mile race tracks etc, NEW home builders/owners complain about race tracks that were there OVER 50 years ago (long before their house was built) and now they want it closed, tons of race tracks across the country are being closed over these idots…
Yup, they should have checked the area before they bought the house. The main westward rail line from Baltimore to the west runs close to my neighborhood. We are about a half mile from the tracks, and up a couple hundred feet from it. My street continues and runs next to the tracks but still a couple hundred feet up. When I first moved in I used to walk down the road past the tracks. The sides of the valley acted as an echo chamber and the freight trains were very load when they passed. I’m sure those people didn’t check early Sunday morning or in the middle of the night when the trains went through. Fortunately the trains don’t go through more than once or twice each day.
