THe government IRS has this to say:

“Standard mileage rate. For 2007, the standard mileage rate for the cost of operating your car for business use is 48? cents per mile.”

This figure must be revised to reflect the recent sharp increase in the price of fuel. However, the principle is simple enough. Everyone agrees on a cost per mile figure. If you are going on a long trip, estimate the miles you will travel and have your passengers pay their share in advance. Settle differences at the end. Also, decide how to handle tolls.

The 2008 figure is $0.505.

2+2=4. Expense/4= expense per person. It’s as simple as that for me.

Well, how about a little more information. Are you going out to dinner or are you driving on vacation for the next six weeks. Usually I would suggest that the to additional people should pay for fuel and call it even (you are paying maintenance and depreciation.)

In the end it is whatever you feel is fair.
