Concerned about engine damage to my 22 Toyota Camry as a result of an oil change and use of a defective oil filter which caused a massive leak. Oil filter had a defect such that it appeared as if it was tightened sufficiently, but it was not. Perhaps something in the thread or other damage to thread. I started the vehicle to check for leaks and observed oil gushing from the filter. I later measured what was left in the engine after the oil change - 1/2 quart. I estimate that no longer than one minute elapsed between when I started the engine, discovered the leak, and turned off the engine. I do not notice any unusual sounds/behavior of the engine after changing the oil AGAIN. I safely assume that any damage (most likely wear and tear and not acute) would not show-up at this point, if at all, in testing? I don’t want to let the manufacturer of the filter off the hook if there is potential engine damage (now or reduced engine life). Thanks for any feedback.
It is fine.
You may have gotten lucky.
I had this same thing happen to me after i did an oil change. Only I was driving the vehicle when the filter let go. I only made it a half block before the oil light came on and had to turn around to drive back. I think I drove that car another 80,000 miles.
All you can do is keep driving, and keep your fingers crossed the next 1,000 miles.

I would not worry too much if you caught it right away. At start up there is still a film of oil on moving parts regardless of what is in the pan.
My job was to service the lawn equipment at the cabin. I had changed oil on everything but hadn’t put oil back in the push mower when my bil grabbed it and started mowing. It wasn’t too long but there was no damage.
Stuff like this happens way more than you think, odds are in your favor…
BTW, just go to the Toyota dealer for the filter, they have excellent prices on oil filters…
I just ordered these from a dealer down in FL that has free delivery on orders over $75.00, but for just the oil filter and even the oil, just go to the dealer…
This is for my 23 Tacoma…
As a comparison, I just spent $23.00 for 5 quarts of non synthetic oil at Walmart and $11.00 for a house brand (CarQuest blue box) oil filter for my 09 Vibe/Matrix at Advance Auto… Next time I will buy the filter at the dealer… Both were done/ordered over the weekend…
BTW the list on the dealer oil filter is still only $5.97 MSRP…
I use Honda filters but order a half dozen on line for about $5 each. Always have extra on hand. I use Gm for the Pontiac. I suppose others are just fine but it makes me feel better. I always have extra oil and filters on hand in case of a problem.
I haven’t seen non-synthetic multi-weight oil in a LONG LONG time. I bought SAE 30 weight oil for my power washer in the spring - which was tough to find.
Yeah I meant non full or blend.. (brain fart) lol
But Castrol GTX DOES still make multi-weight Conventional motor oil
I haven’t really looked recently. I usually buy my oil from Walmart and they don’t have any conventional oil on their shelves (at least the one I shop at).
Castrol still makes caster oil based motor oil! These are considered the best oil for air cooled engines. Porsche racers used this as long there were air cooled engines and still do. Definitely not available at Walmart
