Eeny, Meeny, Miney, Mo, Help Me Choose A Rental Car... Here We Go!

The first trip Mrs. Triedaq and I took just after we were married was a trip by rail to San Francisco with a stop at Flagstaff, AZ so we could go to the Grand Canyon. We rented a car in Flagstaff to drive up to the Canyon and to take a trip to the Painted Desert. The car that.we rented was a Chevrolet Vega with a manual shift. The price was right. A couple of years later, Mrs. Triedaq volunteered to take the youth from our church to a work camp 500 miles away. The church rented Ford Econoline van for the trip. There was a big sign on the dashboard that read “Check Oil At Each Gas Stop”. The van made the 1000 mile trip without problems, although I think it did need a quart of oil along the way. The van was rented from " Rent a Wreck". The Vega came from some similar company.

On other trips there I had a Nissan Rogue

The Rogue is not the same class as the Cherokee. The Pathfinder is more in line.

Which side do you want the gas filler tube to be?

The Edge, Rogue and Cherokee were both in the intermediate SUV category at the rental company (same airport). It was their classification, not mine. I had a free upgrade and they gave me the Enclave for that trip. It is a premium SUV, but I still liked the Cherokee better.

Note that this only pertains to rentals, not purchases. If I were buying, I’d consider reliability in the decision since it would be for 10 or more years and not up to two weeks as a rental might be.

@“common sense answer” You mentioned driver’s outward visibility as a concern. Of the four models you mention the Camry by far has the best visibility and least blind spots in the 2015 models so likely still does in the 2016 version.

The Camry back seat is quite adequate although slightly less smooth a back seat ride than the Malibu.

The Camry trunk is easier to load and unload and arrange luggage in than the Fusion.

You guys were correct. When I arrived at the rental lot on Friday, 03/04 afternoon they offered me a black 2016 Chrysler 200, saying it got 36mpg. I jokingly said something about a black car in Florida and they said they’d check with the clean-up guy to see what else he had to get ready…Or… I could I have the car next to it, a silver AWD 2016 Dodge Journey (cross-over?) SXT with 3.6L engine and only 26mpg. It had 4,365 miles on it. Before I could finish asking my wife which one she preferred, she said, “We’ll take the Journey.”

I asked what they wanted me to do if the “Oil Change Light” comes on when I was a long distance away. They asked where I was going and estimated I would drive 2,000 miles. I said, “Try 3,000 miles.” The company changes oil every 5,000 miles and asked if I could spare 10 minutes. They immediately took the car to Pennzoil quicky next-door and the guy brought it back in 10 minutes all set.

I was tempted to leave my wife and daughter as the two young women working the counter wanted to go with me and said that I would not believe what a deal they could get on a rental, haha.

This little off-airport major rental brand locationdid everything to make me a happy customer! I was!

We drove the car 3,326 miles over 10 days of rental and returned it Monday 03/14. There were no additional charges or hassles.

This fleet car did not have a back-up camera (at least I couldn’t find one) and that was a bit inconvenient, but was comfortable, roomy, quiet, had a good sound system, and we enjoyed it! The vehicle handled and performed well and had no bad habits. It did get 26-28 mpg.
We had good travel weather and it was sunny and in the 80s during our stay!

I would definitely rent again, for a long trip, and I will.

I always order the smallest, cheapest car and usually get the next size up for the same price. Once I ordered a Ford Escort from Budget and ended up with a Lincoln Town car as a “promotion” for frequent renters!.

When I rented on March 4 the rental agency had a “full size” car (Chrysler 200) ready to go and possibly others available after a rinse and vacuum, so I never would have guessed they’d upgrade me, free of extra charge, to a larger more expensive vehicle. All their vehicles are 2016 models.

This place was fairly local for me and they did everything to make me happy, the upgrade, the oil change, and the car had nearly a half tank of gas and noted that I was to return it with 1/4 tank, which I did. The young woman who waited on me was friendly, knowledgeable, took time with me, and thoroughly went over the vehicle with me.

The vehicle was “unlimited miles” and when I returned it with 3,300 miles driven there were no surprises or extra charges. The whole thing was a truly pleasant experience. Service like this is difficult to find today, in my opinion.
