Drum Brakes, Self Adjuster Screw Bent "Normal"?

2005 Camry, drum brakes.

Is the threaded portion supposed to be bent like this? This is part of the drum brakes. It’s a pretty thick screw, so I find it hard to believe somehow this got bent. But when disassembling it “wobbled”. I unscrewed it completely and noticed that it was bent. So this thing.

Can anyone confirm this is normal? Find it hard to believe it being bent is normal, but also find it hard to believe something happened to cause it to bend so badly as it’s pretty thick.

Also, just to confirm the technical term is “self adjuster” for the part that got bent?

Not normal

dang I have no idea how this happened. I guess I should fix it.

Only a few bucks online aftermarket. Like $10

Toyota doesn’t sell just a single one, and you have to buy both by the looks of it. More than $100 lol.

Some idiot turned the screw the wrong way with great force to the end of its travel until the shaft bent.

In the late 60s I had to call the state police on an inspection station that opened up on the closest street corner who did this to my brakes and then failed me because my emergency brakes would not hold. Ge e bound then so tight that they had to be heated wit a torch to get them free.

Never use a shop where the owner keeps walking back and forth between your car and the office consulting a Motor repair manual.

My bad, of course they don’t make motor repair manuals anymore. They do make incompetents to this day though.

It’s bent halfway. So the brakes were somewhat worn when it got bent. My money would be on some prior hack prying the brakes off the car during a service rather than taking their time removing springs, retainers etc.

Yes the star adjuster is bent, to me it looks like someone pried the drum off that had a lip on it and did not bother to turn the star wheel adjuster back in enough to slide the drum off, could be possible damage to other brake parts back there, for the price, I would replace basically everything back there but the wheel cylinders, you can normally get everything in kit forms…

I think even a non mechanic would think that the adjuster is bent and not normal and should be replaced.

An unconscious mechanic can damage a lot of things when he tries to change brake shoes without releasing the parking brake. Ten agressive minutes with a prybar and some odd things can happen.
