I guess I didn’t do it by design but more like stubborness. In 74 I bought my first new car then shortly after that got a job requiring a 100 mile commute. So just started driving it until I needed better mileage in 81. So got an Olds diesel. Cost me an extra $800 for the diesel but got 25 MPG with it. Two years later I wanted trade it but was only offered $2400 on my $10,000 car with 70,000 on it. I told them to stick it and just kept driving it. Dumped it after 480,000. Then started buying them with 100K on or so for my commuter and keeping the new car at home. So it was more just what made sense economically but gotta say I always enjoyed having a low mileage car for the family car. Now that I’m off the road, I really prefer low mileage with a warranty. I know you can put many hundreds of thousands of miles on a car though if you are willing but not without a factory service manual.
There might also be regional differences. Up here in NH cars rot out, and the potholes beat teh bejesus out of the chassis.
