Does new driver anxiety go away with time?

A mere child, in the total scheme of things!

I am now 75 years old, and if not for still having excellent vision and reflexes, I could have T-boned an SUV that suddenly pulled-out of a side road, and tried to make a left turn in front of me. The offending driver may or may not have been older than me (appearances can be deceiving, I think), but his deficient driving skills would have resulted in disastrous consequences if not for my ability to avoid him.

A 75 year old calling a 74 year old a mere child. That’s rich.

Everyone older than me is a geezer and everyone younger is a child. I’m middle aged and have been for decades.

Unfortunately, having other people in the car can be a major distraction for a new driver, proven to increase accident frequency.

More than one study has found that new drivers have more accidents when they are carrying passengers (i.e. friends) in the car.

Yup, thats something that definitely contributed to my little bumping accident. And being sleep deprived hehe.

Yup i feel like im slowly building confidence, especially on the roads ive driven a lot. Also driving in the evening when there is little traffic is honestly pretty chill and i almost dont even get anxious about it anymore.

It’s usually when i have to go somewhere ive never driven to and through lots of traffic during rush hour.

My son turned 16 and got his driver’s license in April. Our state requires that he not carry any passengers for the first 6 months (other than direct family members) of driving.

Starting next week he can start driving his friends around.

Same in Colorado, at least in my teenage era. I always thought that law made a lot of sense.

I’m pretty comfortable with my driving. The only time I stress about it is when I’m trying to park at Costco during the holidays.

Those Costco parking lots can indeed be stressful. Folks can really get possessive when competing for the same parking spot. Googling “Costco parking lot shooting” will likely turn up some examples.

My strategy at Costco and in other stores’ parking lots is to immediately drive to the most remote part of the lot. Many people are incredibly lazy, and because of that reality, one has the best prospects for a parking space in the areas furthest from the store. And, it gives me a bit more exercise.

There was a new phenomenon (I think) a couple of days ago, in Texas.
A customer wasn’t happy with a car salesman’s price quote, so he shot and killed the salesman. The perp was apprehended, so how he won’t be driving anything for many years.

Video recently released from the dashcam of a Portland Oregon man driving around the closed off ramp and onto the parade route back in June, nice of him to record the whole thing on his dashcam. Appeared to be enraged he couldn’t get off at the rose quarter where several exits were closed to keep traffic from the parade route.

As long as I can make the walk I’ll park some distance away and push my cart to my car and load my bags in my trunk. I do try to park within one aisle of a cart corral but that’s so I can make a “quick” getaway.

Hard to understand what would motivate that sort of behavior when the simple alternative is for the customer to say “thanks for your time, but your quote is a little more than I was expecting”, leave & drive to another dealership. Folks do seem pretty on edge these days, what with the worrying news stories. Very sorry for the salesman and his family, didn’t sign up for that sort of treatment. At least that perp is removed from society.

I do not mind walking from far spots, I love Costco extra wide parking spaces.

The spacing of parking spaces in private lots is highly variable.
There are a couple of supermarkets in my area which I refuse to patronize, because their lots are very small, and the parking spaces are so narrow that it is close to impossible to avoid a situation of someone opening their door into the side of your car. Then, throw-in an errant shopping cart, and damage is pretty-much of a sure thing.

I don’t have that problem at my local supermarket of choice, or at Costco, or at Whole Foods.

The Costco I use is not alone. There are several other big box stores in the same shopping center. All the spots are the same size whether at the Costco or Lowes or in front of any of the 4 or 5 stores in between. The smaller stores surrounding the Costco gas station have similarly sized parking spaces.
